Big win for South Australians with North-South Corridor on track for early completion

12 August, 2024

RAA has welcomed an announcement that the North-South Corridor is likely to be delivered earlier than expected, making for faster and safer journeys by 2031.

The Federal and State Governments have announced that a consortium comprising John Holland, Bouygues Construction, Arcadis Australia, Jacobs and Ventia has been selected as the preferred alliance partner for the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) project, which will complete the 78-kilometre North-South Corridor.

The contractors will now use three tunnel boring machines instead of the expected two, allowing the north and south tunnels to be built concurrently – meaning it is likely the project will be delivered earlier than 2031.

RAA Senior Manager Safety and Infrastructure said the announcement was a big win for motorists.

“This is a vital project for South Australians that RAA has been calling for since the 1980s,” Mr Mountain said.

“To hear the T2D project is now likely to be completed early is good news for motorists, who will be counting down the days until the new motorway is opened.

“Once complete, it will make for faster and safer journeys across Adelaide.

“RAA also welcomes updates to the design which provide for no traffic lights between the corridor and James Congdon Drive, allowing for even smoother journeys for drivers heading to and from the CBD once the project is complete.

“We look forward to works progressing and will keep our more than 800,000 RAA members updated throughout the project.”

Once finished, the T2D project will allow drivers to avoid 21 existing sets of traffic lights between the River Torrens and Darlington, completing the non-stop 78-kilometre North-South Corridor between Gawler and Old Noarlunga.

The completed motorway should save drivers 30 to 40 minutes when travelling between Hindmarsh and Darlington during peak hour.
