Following a successful six-month trial of a mobile electric vehicle charging service, RAA has announced it is now a permanent offering for members.
In January an RAA patrol van was equipped with a seven-kilowatt charging unit featuring a Type-2 compatible cable and type 1 adaptor allowing it to charge almost all electric vehicle makes and models if they run out of charge in metropolitan Adelaide, as part of the initial trial.
The mobile EV charger unit can provide about a one-kilometre range per minute of charging, meaning in as little as 15 minutes, EV drivers will have around 15km of range so they can either drive home or to their nearest charging station.
The mobile EV charger will now be permanently rolled into RAA’s road service offering for anyone in the metropolitan area.
RAA General Manager Automotive Services Dorothy Nycz said the technology helps give RAA members peace of mind knowing if their electric vehicle runs out of charge, our mobile EV charger will be there to get them moving again.
“Providing a mobile EV charging service gives some extra comfort for South Australians who are looking to transition to zero emission vehicles,” Ms Nycz said
“In 2023 an RAA survey found range anxiety – the fear of running out of charge – is one of the main barriers to EV uptake, and this is another way we’re alleviating those concerns, in addition to the rollout of our border-to-border public charging network.
“While EVs rarely run out of charge on the road, it does occur so it’s important we offer this service on a permanent basis, as more and more EVs are entering the vehicle fleet each month.”
There is now estimated to be more than 10,000 electric vehicles on the road in SA – with almost 3,000 new EVs hitting the road in the first half of 2024.
The mobile EV charger compliments the RAA Charge public charging network, which is now well over 90% complete and on track to be finished later this year.
RAAs ongoing commitment to EV technology is continuing with the near completion of the RAA Charge network across the state.
