Here’s why families are choosing self-drive holidays

14 July, 2023

With the current high cost-of-living, self-drive trips are a cost-effective way of travelling with the whole family.

RAA Travel has recently reported an increase in popularity for self-drive holidays, both domestically and overseas.

General Manager of RAA Travel and Distribution Gina Norman said self-drive holidays provide the freedom to venture wherever you want and is easy with the kids.

“Kangaroo Island, Great Ocean Road, Tasmania, Margaret River are all popular choices when it comes to self-drive travel in Australia, in addition to Alice Springs and Darwin,” Ms Norman said.

“Internationally, New Zealand remains a top choice and we’re also seeing an increase for Iceland and the beautiful Tuscany region of Italy.”

Ms Norman said to drive overseas, in some countries there is a strong recommendation to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP), but in other countries this is a requirement by law – even for the famous Mario Kart track in Japan, an International Driving Permit is required.

“An IDP is really easy to apply for, you can either apply online at RAA Travel or go into any of our RAA shops where we can issue it on the spot for only $49,” Ms Norman said.

“In fact, RAA Travel is issuing around 3,000 IDPs per month at the moment.”

Ms Norman said to reduce fuel costs, travellers can consider hiring an electric vehicle (EV).

“If you’re considering purchasing an EV in the future, this is a great way to test one out and decide if it is right for you.

“RAA Charge is creating a network of EV chargers across the state which will be completed by the end of next year, allowing you to travel regionally without worrying about your driving range.”
