We’re reminding road users to show care after more lives were lost in January on South Australian roads than in any month last year.
SA Police data shows there were 11 lives lost and 89 serious injuries on SA roads in January 2023, representing a worse month on our roads than any in 2022. The last time there were more than 10 lives lost in a calendar month was March 2021.
It comes as two drivers were clocked doing extreme speeds in excess of 190km/h and 250km/h this week.
RAA Senior Manager Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain urged all road users to be vigilant and look out for one another.
“The number of lives lost and serious injuries on our roads in January is a very concerning start to the year,” Charles said.
“Last year we saw 71 lives lost on our roads, but South Australia was one of only two Australian states where this figure was lower than the year prior.
“What we have seen in January reminds us that we can’t afford to be complacent whenever we get behind the wheel or share the road with others.”
The data shows that in January seven of the lives lost were light vehicle drivers, two were motorcyclists, one was a cyclist and one was a pedestrian.
Charles said the 89 serious injuries suffered on SA roads last month was also an alarming number.
“We should never lose sight of the profound impact serious injuries have on those affected and their families, with many individuals never making a full recovery.
“Factors such as distraction and fatigue are major contributors to crashes, so it is essential we’re well rested, calm and focused when driving or riding.
“Keeping this in mind will be especially important as our roads become busier in the next few months, with various festivals and the mad March period on the near horizon.
