Motorists planning a summer road trip are being encouraged to perform simple safety checks to look after their vehicle and their passengers.
RAA Road Service call-out data shows the most common reason for breakdowns in regional SA during summer are for engines not starting and flat batteries – with around 20% of callouts requiring a tow due to mechanical issues that can’t be fixed on the spot.
Further, breakdowns related to vehicle cooling systems spike by 63% in summer compared with the winter months.
The data has prompted an RAA reminder for drivers to give their car a once-over before taking it on a long trip.
Simple measures like checking fluid levels before setting off can help to prevent mechanical issues that could cut short a summer getaway.
RAA Mobility Expert Mark Borlace said setting aside some time to prepare your car was a worthy investment and plan your trip, particularly for electric vehicle (EV) drivers.
“Hitting the road over summer is one of life’s great joys – and no one wants it to be ruined by a problem with their vehicle,” Mr Borlace said.
“Showing your car some love before you head off can reduce your risk mechanical issues such as your engine overheating, which can impact your holiday and lead to very costly repairs.
“Issues like running out of engine oil or coolant are often preventable just by checking your levels before you leave – or having someone more confident do it for you.
“If your car’s battery is getting on a bit or showing some signs of ill health, such as dim lights or struggling to start your engine, consider getting it replaced before you leave.”
Mr Borlace said RAA’s patrol network will be helping broken down motorists across the state throughout the summer period.
“RAA’s patrols will be working all throughout the festive season so if you do have any issues with your vehicle, give us a call or use the RAA app to book road service,” Mr Borlace said.
“Remember RAA memberships follow the person (not the vehicle) and members have reciprocal rights with our interstate motoring clubs, who can come and rescue you if you’re in another state.
“Drivers can also use the RAA app to check where petrol is cheapest near them and plan their fuel stops accordingly.”
RAA’s summer road trip car advice
1. Check your fluid levels
Ensure your engine oil, coolant and wiper blade fluid is all topped up. Running out of engine oil or coolant risks your car overheating and very expensive repairs, while a clear windscreen is essential on country roads.
2. Check your tyres
Ensure your tyres have at least 1.6mm tread on them. Worn tyres can increase your stopping distance which is especially dangerous on regional roads where you’ll be travelling at high speeds.
3. Check your lights and battery
Double-check your headlights, brake lights and indicators (including on trailers or caravans) are all in working order. If your car’s battery has been showing signs of ill health (such as slow engine starting or dim lights) or is older than 3-5 years, consider replacing it before you go. Packing jumper leads is a good idea as well.
4. Plan your route and rest stops
Taking regular rest breaks, sharing the driving where possible and avoiding driving at night all help to fight fatigue – one of the Fatal 5 causes of road trauma.
5. Pack smart
If you’re loading up the car boot, pack your heaviest gear down low and as far forward as possible to reduce your risk of items moving around if you need to stop suddenly.
6. Consider a service at an RAA Approved Repairer
If you have any concerns with your vehicle, consider booking in with an RAA Approved Repairer to make sure it’s road trip-ready before you set off.
7. Get your EV ready
If you’re taking your EV out on a road trip, don’t forget to plan your charging stops ahead of time with A Better Route Planner; pack your RFID card if you’re traveling remotely, and ensure your Type 2 plug is in the boot if you plan on using RAA Charge 7kW Destination chargers.
