The Holden Commodore has once again topped the list of vehicles most targeted by thieves in South Australia, according to new RAA Insurance data.

The Holden Commodore has once again topped the list of vehicles most targeted by thieves in South Australia, according to new RAA Insurance data.

Around one in five motor theft claims lodged with RAA over the past three years involved a Holden Commodore, making it the most stolen vehicle overall.

Rounding out the top five vehicles most frequently targeted are the Toyota LandCruiser, Ford Ranger, Mazda Mazda3 and Toyota Corolla.

Encouragingly, motor theft claims have declined slightly over the past 12 months at RAA, following a surge in claims during 2024.

The claims include both stolen vehicles and vehicle break-ins to steal property.

RAA Head of Claims Jess Lyons is reminding motorists that vehicle thefts remain a risk, particularly for commonly targeted models, and that taking basic precautions can significantly reduce the chance of theft.

“Vehicle thefts are often opportunistic, which means even small precautions can significantly reduce the risk of having your car targeted,” Ms Lyons said.

“Locking your vehicle every time you leave it – even for short stops or when parked at home – is obviously very important.

“Where possible, motorists should park in well-lit, secure locations or garages, as visibility and lighting are proven deterrents to vehicle break-ins.

“Keeping keys out of sight rather than on the kitchen counter, and using signal-blocking pouches for keyless vehicles can help prevent thieves from gaining electronic access to your car.

“Visible security measures such as steering wheel locks or immobilisers can make a vehicle far less appealing, encouraging thieves to move on to an easier target.

“On the other hand, leaving valuables or loose items in a vehicle can increase the likelihood of a break-in, so don’t leave valuables in your car.

“By taking a few practical precautions, motorists can protect their vehicle and reduce their risk of theft.”
