Caravan breakdown boom prompts servicing reminder

1 April, 2025

RAA receives the highest number of caravan breakdown callouts in March prompting a servicing reminder with an RAA Approved Repairer.

South Australians fondly refer to this month as ‘Mad March,’ for the events elevating our great state.

But, it may have a polarising meaning for those looking to take a caravan road trip.

According to RAA data, March is the worst month for caravan breakdowns, far eclipsing the summer months of December and January.

March and April account for one in five (21%) of caravan callouts per annum and RAA Mobility Technology Specialist Mark Borlace recommends caravan owners to get their vehicles serviced ahead of the upcoming Easter break.

“It’s crucial to ensure your caravan is roadworthy if you’re planning on travelling within either the metropolitan or regional areas this Easter,” Mr Borlace said.

“Make sure to check parts which can cause common problems, including your brakes, wiring, gas systems and tyres for wear and tear.

“By visiting one of our RAA Approved Caravan Servicers you can hit the open road with peace of mind.”

According to RAA Automotive data, the most common cause of caravan breakdowns are flat tyres, with RAA attending 1363 callouts from January 2020 to March 2025.

Of these callouts only 467 (34%) were in the metro area while the country accounted for a majority of reports, with 895 jobs (65%).

This year, RAA have recorded 27 (caravan or trailer) flat tyre callouts from March 1-25 – which exceeds one per day.

“Before going on a road trip, ensure your tread depth and inflation pressure are up to standard, and make sure the caravan hasn’t been towed for at least two hours before checking your inflation pressure,” Mr Borlace said.

“Check for cracks or cuts in the tyres, and if you see signs of uneven wear, be aware this could be caused by a wheel alignment issue.

“Also make sure to replace your tyres every five years, even if the tread still looks good, tyres do degrade and must be replaced.”

Mike Griggs Caravan Crash and Service Managing Director Heath Griggs has some advice for travellers hitting the road this Easter.

“Make sure your fridge batteries are working, don’t be fooled by a battery that you consider to be fully operational,” Mr Griggs said.

“Another of our biggest problems is customers not securing their awnings properly.

“Prevention is better than a cure and it might save you a major hassle either on your trip, or when you return home.

“Always plan for the worst, and hope for the best.”

Heath Griggs also said it’s an honour to be an RAA Approved Repairer in the caravan servicing space.

“RAA is a trusted and recognised brand with our clients, and we believe we also provide that trust to our customers.

“Due to this, we think the RAA partnership is a fantastic fit for the business.”
