Cruise season begins with demand at record highs

3 October, 2024

South Australia’s 2024-25 cruise season sets sail this week – with almost 120 ships set to visit SA ports over the next five months – and there is still some availability for those who want to get on board.

According to Cruise Lines International Association, more than 1.25 million Australians went on a cruise in 2023 – with around 27% of those being first-time cruisers.

Cruise sales at RAA Travel swelled by 79% last financial year to be almost 200% above pre-COVID levels, as more travellers embrace the cost-effective and convenient travel option.

South Australia’s cruise season kicks off on Thursday when Princess Cruises’ 2600-passenger Diamond Princess departs from Outer Harbor on a return trip to New Zealand, with 119 ships expected to visit SA this season.

RAA Travel General Manager Gina Norman said more people were considering cruising as their next holiday than ever before.

“Demand for cruising among travellers is at record highs because it’s easy to plan and it represents great value for money,” Ms Norman said.

“We know cruisegoers love the convenience of having everything taken care of on board – such as food, drinks, activities and entertainment – and only having to unpack once.

“There is also a much wider range of experiences now thanks to the rise of expedition cruises that allow you to explore remote locations on smaller, purpose-built ships.

“The 2022-23 cruise season generated $215 million for the South Australian economy and supported more than 700 local jobs – and that economic impact stretches well into our regions.”

Ms Norman said there was still availability for travellers who wanted to make a last-minute booking for this season, and next season is already selling fast.

“Many cruisegoers are booking 12-18 months in advance, however there are also some great pack-and-go options if you’re keen to get on board this season,” Ms Norman said.

“There are some amazing voyages departing Brisbane or Sydney for destinations like the South Pacific or New Zealand that still have good availability.

“Have a chat with your local travel agent as there are plenty of options if you’ve decided to take a holiday this summer but don’t want to have to worry about all the planning and booking.

“The cruise season is also a peak time for bookings for next year – so if you’re considering a cruise, we recommend getting in early to get the best value before the most popular itineraries start to sell out.”
