RAA is also reminding parents and caregivers to keep their little ones safe by ensuring they’re supervised at all times, and not wearing costumes that obstruct their vision.
Where possible, use designated pedestrian crossings, ensure children hold an adult’s hand when crossing the street, and always ‘Stop, Look, Listen and Think’ before stepping onto the road.
RAA Senior Traffic Engineer Matt Vertudaches said Halloween night sees a spike in young pedestrians out on SA roads, many wearing costumes that can make them harder to spot.
“Halloween is all about spooky surprises, but the last thing anyone wants is a scare on our roads,” Mr Vertudaches said.
“With more children and families out walking, particularly around dusk, drivers need to slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected.
“Costumes can sometimes limit visibility or make it tricky for kids to see cars, so motorists should take extra care at intersections and in residential streets.
“We also remind parents to plan a safe route for trick-or-treating, stick to well-lit area, and always hold young children’s hands when crossing the road.
“It’s a great night of fun for families, but a bit of road sense from both drivers and pedestrians can make sure everyone gets home safely – with plenty of lollies to show for it.
“If you’re behind the wheel, be aware there will be children out and about tonight so take it easy, drive to the conditions and don’t get distracted.”
