Don’t let floodwater drown your plans this long weekend

6 March, 2026

Flooded roads remain a serious risk across parts of regional South Australia this long weekend, with RAA urging drivers to check conditions and never drive through floodwater..

As thousands of South Australians prepare to hit the road for the long weekend, RAA is reminding travellers that recent heavy rains have left a number of regional roads closed or restricted.

Many routes to the north, east and west of the state remain impacted, with conditions changing quickly depending on local weather and runoff.

Drivers heading to regional areas this weekend are being urged to check all road closures on the Department for Infrastructure and Transport’s Outback Roads website before departing, and to allow extra time for their journey.

Flowing water presents an even greater risk, with research from Monash University research showing 43 per cent of flood-related fatalities occurred when drivers attempted to cross floodwaters.

RAA Senior Manager Road Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain said no trip was worth risking your life.

“Driving through floodwater is one of the most dangerous decisions a motorist can make,” Mr Mountain said.

“Floodwaters can conceal deep potholes, washed-out sections of road and debris, creating hidden dangers beneath what may appear to be shallow water.

“Even when the water looks shallow, you have no way of knowing what’s happening underneath – the road surface could be damaged or completely washed away.

“It only takes a small amount of moving water to destabilise a vehicle, and once you lose traction you can very quickly lose control.

“If you come across water over the road, the safest option is always to turn around and find an alternative route.”
