Drivers risking their lives by ignoring flood warnings

10 July, 2026

South Australians are being urged not to drive through floodwater, with research showing almost half of all flood deaths in Australia involved people attempting to do so.

As wet weather impacts the state, RAA is reminding motorists that even shallow floodwater can hide serious dangers including fast-moving currents, washed-out road surfaces, debris and deep potholes.

The SA Government identifies the following as higher flood-risk areas:

  • Brown Hill and Keswick Creeks catchment
  • Port Adelaide
  • Lower Onkaparinga River
  • Gawler River catchment
  • Numbered Creeks in the River Torrens catchment
  • Areas below Lock 1 on the River Murray

With school holidays prompting South Australians to travel further from home, RAA is reminding motorists that the following roads are frequently closed during flooding events:

  • Mount Barker Road at Hahndorf (Onkaparinga River flooding)
  • Verdun interchange exit from the South Eastern Freeway
  • Birdsville Track (Cooper Creek crossing)
  • Strzelecki Track
  • Oodnadatta Track
  • Flinders Ranges Way in parts of the Mid North and Flinders Ranges

RAA Senior Traffic Engineer Matthew Vertudaches said no destination was worth risking a life.

“Floodwater is often deeper and moving much faster than it appears,” Mr Vertudaches said.

“Drivers can’t see what’s beneath the surface. The road may have been damaged, washed away or hiding debris capable of immobilising a vehicle.

“Many people assume they’ll get through safely, particularly in a four-wheel drive, but floodwater doesn’t discriminate.

“Once water builds up against a vehicle’s side, it can push the car off the road. There’s also the risk of water being drawn into the engine through the air intake, causing significant and costly damage.

“If the road is covered by water, the safest decision is to turn around and find another route.

“Flooded roads can quickly become life-threatening, and the inconvenience of turning around is nothing compared to the consequences of getting it wrong.”

RAA is reminding motorists to:

  • Never drive through floodwater
  • Obey all road closure signs and barriers
  • Allow extra travel time during severe weather
  • Check road conditions before travelling
  • Turn around and find an alternative route if water is covering the road
