Fast and fined: The car brands with the most speeding offences

22 October, 2025

Tesla and Audi drivers are being caught speeding more often than any other motorists – according to new data analysis by RAA – prompting a reminder for all drivers to adhere to the speed limit.

RAA has compared SA Police data showing the number of speeding offences committed by drivers of different car makes against State Government registration data, to reveal the worst speeding offenders on a per registered vehicle basis.

The analysis reveals Tesla and Audi drivers commit the most speeding offences per registered vehicle.

Between July 2024 and June 2025, 986 speeding offences were recorded by the 5,936 Teslas registered in South Australia – equating to 0.166 speeding offences per vehicle.

Audi drivers weren’t far behind – 2,181 speeding offences were committed by the 13,224 registered Audis for 0.165 per vehicle.

That means the equivalent of one in six Tesla and Audi drivers recorded a speeding offence last financial year.

The next worst offending car makes on SA roads were RAM (0.159 offences per vehicle), Jeep (0.138) and LDV (0.137).

Toyotas recorded the most speeding offences overall with 35,079 offences – but at a rate of 0.105 per vehicle due to the large number of registrations (333,245).

The data shows Tesla and Audi drivers are around 71% more likely to be caught speeding than Mazda drivers, who committed 0.097 speeding offences per vehicle (less than 1 in 10).

When it came to higher-range speeding, Audi drivers were again the worst offenders among car drivers – recording speeding offences for exceeding the limit by at least 20km/h at a rate of 0.0123 per vehicle, followed by Porsche (0.0115) and RAM (0.011) drivers.

However, riders of two motorcycle makes were the worst overall culprits for exceeding the speed limit by 20km/h or more – Kawasaki riders recorded 0.0138 offences per vehicle, and Ducati riders 0.0135.

RAA Senior Traffic Engineer Matt Vertudaches said RAA was using the data to remind drivers and riders that speeding was one of the Fatal 5 causes of road trauma.

“This is fascinating data showing drivers of some makes of car are exceeding the speed limit more often than others,” Mr Vertudaches said.

“Some modern vehicles can accelerate very rapidly and in some instances their design can mask a driver’s perception of speed, especially where other crash factors such as inattention are involved.

“EVs like Teslas are very smooth to drive so there’s a potential these drivers could be getting complacent and creeping over the limit – knowingly or unknowingly.

“Three of the top five worst offending car makes – RAM, Jeep and LDV – produce a lot of large utes and SUVs, so these may also be masking drivers’ perception of speed.

“It is ultimately a driver’s responsibility to maintain a safe and appropriate speed, taking their vehicle’s capabilities into account.

“Speed is a killer on our roads – and motorists should adhere to the speed limit no matter what vehicle they’re driving.

“If you’re knowingly flouting the speed limit, you’d do well to remember that speeding gives you less time to react if something unexpected occurs, which could have tragic consequences.

“To see two motorcycle makes come out as the biggest culprits for higher range speeding shows that several riders are gambling with their safety – and the safety of others – despite them being more vulnerable road users, which is alarming.

“It is important drivers and riders of all vehicles drive to the conditions and abide by the prevailing speed limit – for the safety of themselves and other road users.”
