Fuel bargains to be had as wholesale price falls to 18-month low

28 August, 2024

The price of unleaded fuel has dropped to below 165c per litre at many outlets across Adelaide, as wholesale prices fall to their lowest levels in more than 18 months.

Unleaded prices in Adelaide are expected to remain low for the next few days as part of the regular unleaded price cycle, so drivers are encouraged to shop around using the RAA app and fill up the tank where it’s cheap.

Filling the tank before the next price rise should save motorists at least $20-30 – enough to buy a couple of extra showbags for the kids.

As of Wednesday morning, many outlets were selling unleaded around or below the current terminal gate (wholesale) price of 163c per litre – the lowest wholesale ULP price since December 2022.

The drop in wholesale fuel prices is attributed to a stabilisation of the international market in recent months, following the uncertainty caused by the war in the Middle East.

RAA’s Mark Borlace

RAA Fuel Expert Mark Borlace encouraged drivers to use a fuel price checking tool like the RAA app to find the cheapest fuel near them.

“It’s good news for motorists with unleaded prices falling to the mid-160c per litre at most outlets across Adelaide,” Mr Borlace said.

“If you need to fill the tank, shop around using the RAA app and you should be able to score a bargain in the next few days.

“A range of global factors such as inflation and the wars in the Middle East saw volatile prices earlier this year, but wholesale prices have been trending down in recent months.

“If you get in before the next price spike, that should save you enough to buy for a couple of extra showbags for the kids.

A recent ACCC report found SA drivers who use fuel price checking tools were saving an average of $486 per year.

With more than 65,000 drivers using the RAA app to find cheap fuel every month – drivers are saving more than $20 million each year.

South Australian motorists can find the cheapest fuel near them on the RAA app or website.
