Fuel excise halved, as new fuel availability updates go live on RAA app

31 March, 2026

RAA welcomes the temporary cut to the fuel excise to provide relief at the bowser, as a new RAA app feature launches to show statewide and regional fuel availability.

Today the Federal Government announced the 52.6-cent-per-litre fuel excise will be halved for a period of three months – a measure that will save drivers around $19 on a typical 65-litre tank.

The heavy vehicle road user charge will also be removed for the same period.

The fuel excise is collected to provide revenue for upgrading and maintaining roads, and RAA support this as a temporary measure provided there is no decrease to infrastructure and road funding across the country.

RAA General Manager Community & Corporate Affairs Emily Perry said the announcement would be welcome news for drivers facing record fuel prices.

“Halving the fuel excise will help drivers and families deal with the current fuel crisis by saving them around $19 on a typical tank,” Ms Perry said.

“RAA supports this as a temporary measure to provide price relief for households and businesses – but does not want to see this come at the expense of road and infrastructure funding in the long-term.”

It comes as RAA launches a new feature on the RAA app, in collaboration with the South Australian Government, to provide more information to motorists about fuel supply in South Australia.

The real-time fuel pricing feature on the RAA app and website already shows the price and availability of fuel at each outlet in SA.

From today, the RAA app will also show the total number of service stations experiencing fuel ‘stockouts’ – supplemented by a map showing real-time availability and pricing at every fuel outlet across South Australia.

To see the number of stockouts, app users will need to update their app and click the graph icon in the top-right corner of the Fuel Map.

As of this morning, around 90% of all fuel retailers in SA have all types of fuel available. Due to local distribution and other issues, around 78 of South Australia’s approximately 709 service stations are reporting no availability of one or more types of fuel.

In the majority of cases, stockouts are being quickly replenished after unprecedented demand driven by concern about sustained petrol and diesel shortages. As a result of increased demand, wholesalers have been placing their terminals across Australia on 100 per cent allocations for many fuel grades and types, with some regional retailers unable to source sufficient supply at short notice.

Ms Perry said RAA was continuing to work with the State Government to ensure South Australians have ready access to accurate, timely fuel information.

“Since the conflict in the Middle East began, RAA has been providing accurate and timely advice and information for all South Australian motorists,” Ms Perry said.

“Our advice remains the same – only take what you need and use the RAA app to search for the best deal near you, and availability of fuel.

“The best thing motorists can do is let the local distribution network catch up to the huge spike in demand we’ve seen over the last few weeks.

“We’ve seen a 400% increase in the number of times the RAA real-time fuel feature has been accessed, showing motorists are more engaged than ever as they shop around for the best deal on fuel.”

Premier Peter Malinauskas welcomed the collaboration between the State Government and RAA.

“I would like to thank the RAA for the collaborative way they have engaged with delivering this additional feature on top of the existing real-time fuel pricing information on their app.

“In uncertain times, South Australians are entitled to information about how international shocks are having a local impact at the bowser, and this site will now provide a one-stop shop for motorists.

“The RAA will continue to provide this information daily while the uncertainty in the Middle East continues to impact retailers locally, however intermittently.” The real-time fuel pricing feature on the RAA app and website is free to access. The State Government has confirmed the scheme will remain in place, and has announced plans to triple compliance funding, allowing an additional 100 fuel inspections each month, while doubling existing
