Glenelg tram services suspended for school holidays

3 July, 2026

No trams will run between South Terrace and Moseley Square during the school holidays as major works on the Tram Grade Separation Projects enter their final phase ahead of the Mike Turtur Bikeway reopening.

The temporary closure marks the final major milestone before one of Adelaide’s most popular cycling corridors reopens later this month.

The closure will be in place from Saturday 4 July to Sunday 19 July while crews undertake important works and other maintenance activities.

This closure is required for works that can’t be safely completed with the tram line operating, and include:

  • anti-throw screens and bridge barriers
  • station platform finishing works
  • finishing activities for the Mike Turtur Bikeway at Marion Road and Cross Road, and Morphett Road.

Substitute buses will replace tram services between South Terrace and Moseley Square, while tram services within the city will continue to operate as normal.

RAA Senior Manager Road Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain said the works will deliver significant long-term benefits to cyclists, public transport users and motorists.

“The Mike Turtur Bikeway is one of South Australia’s most important active transport corridors, providing a connection between the city and the coast for thousands of cyclists each week,” Mr Mountain said.

“Its reopening will be welcome news for cycling commuters who have been impacted by the closure during construction.

“While nobody enjoys transport disruptions, this is the final, necessary step before South Australians can once again enjoy a safer and more direct journey along this key active transport route.

“Investing in transport infrastructure improves efficiency and supports more travel choices and, as Adelaide grows, it’s important we continue to invest in projects that support Growth without gridlock.

“RAA is encouraging commuters to plan ahead and allow extra time during the two-week closure period over the school holidays.”

The Tram Grade Separation Projects have removed level crossings at Marion Road, Cross Road and Morphett Road, which has improved safety and reduced delays for road users and public transport passengers.

The Glenelg tram line will reopen from first service on Monday 20 July. The Mike Turtur Bikeway is expected to open in late July.
