Glenelg trams to return following major upgrades

23 January, 2026

Tram services to Glenelg will resume on Australia Day, marking the completion of significant upgrades along one of Adelaide’s busiest transport corridors to reduce delays and improve safety.

The first Glenelg service will depart Stop 13 at 6:09am on Monday, 26 January, with trams returning to regular operations after months of construction works.

The upgrades include:

  • New tram overpasses at Marion, Cross and Morphett Road
  • Reconstruction of the South Road Tram Overpass
  • Removal of three high-traffic level crossings that regularly caused delays and safety risks during peak periods

As part of final preparations, the tram network will be temporarily closed today, tomorrow and Sunday, with substitute bus services operating between Wigley Reserve, the Entertainment Centre and Botanic Gardens tram stops.

RAA Senior Manager Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain said the return of tram services signals an important step forward for road safety and network reliability.

“RAA has long supported the removal of high-risk tram level crossings,” Mr Mountain said.

“Projects like this play a critical role in reducing congestion, improving safety outcomes and supporting the safe movement of people across the network.

“This project delivers long-term safety benefits by removing major conflict points between trams, vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.

“These crossings were among the most congested on the tram network, with boom gates frequently down during peak hours, creating frustration for drivers and increasing the risk of unsafe behaviour.

“By separating trams from road traffic, we’re improving travel times while also making the network safer and more predictable for everyone who uses it.

“Around 50,000 vehicles pass through Marion Road and Cross Road each day, and more than 25,000 use Morphett Road, so the safety and efficiency improvements here will be felt by tens of thousands of South Australians.

“It’s also encouraging to see improved pedestrian access, more accessible tram stops and the elevation of the Mike Turtur Bikeway, which will make this corridor safer and more usable for people walking and riding.”

Substitute bus services will operate during the three-day network closure, and RAA encourages tram users to allow extra time and plan their journey ahead of the return to full services.
