Home batteries powering ahead thanks to Federal subsidy

24 October, 2025

A record number of SA households are purchasing home batteries to store solar energy and save big on power bills, according to RAA Solar & Battery figures.

So far in 2025, around 65% of solar energy systems installed by RAA have included a battery – which is up from 29% two years ago and is the highest percentage on record.

It comes as many households are taking advantage of the new Federal battery subsidy, which came into effect on 1 July.

The subsidy – which is calculated on the kWh capacity of the battery – has seen many customers save around $4,000 on the cost of a typical 11.5kWh battery, or around 30%.

Since the subsidy was announced, RAA Solar and Battery has seen an almost 300% increase in the number of monthly enquiries from households looking to add a battery to their existing solar system compared to the previous months.

South Australia already leads the nation in the uptake of home batteries with a 7% penetration – while other states sit at around 2.3% – according to Sunwiz.

In 2024, South Australians installed 14,686 new battery systems, second only to New South Wales.

RAA Principal Advisor, Energy Peter Nattrass said South Australians wanted to take advantage of the state’s strong solar resources and reduce their power bills.

“Installing a home battery allows surplus solar to be stored for use in the evenings when electricity prices are at their peak – ultimately helping households reduce or eliminate their power bills,” Mr Nattrass said.

“The government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program is a win-win for consumers and our future electricity grid.

“It’s no surprise so many South Australians are keen to invest in a battery, and we can see this picking up even more since the subsidy was announced.

“Cheaper batteries mean the investment makes sense for more households, and this increase in storage will go a long way towards helping SA reach its target of net 100% renewable energy by 2027.”

“Our sales data tells us more and more South Aussies understand the benefits of battery storage and are ready to make this investment in their homes.

“RAA is here to make solar and battery advice simple – in the same way we have been there for our members at the side of the road for the last 120 years, South Aussies can rely on us to provide them with trusted guidance and installation of a system that suits their needs.”
