Huge win for travellers as tides turn for SA cruising

29 October, 2025

South Australian cruise lovers will soon have more options to start a voyage from their home state, with global cruise giant Carnival Cruise Line set to call Adelaide home for the first time.

Carnival has announced its 2836-guest Carnival Adventure will be based in Adelaide during the 2027-28 cruise season – meaning much easier cruise access for South Aussie travellers.

Five cruises are now on sale, including voyages to Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln which range from three to five nights and depart from February 2028.

A three-night one-way voyage will also depart Adelaide to Sydney on 14 March 2028.

The announcements mean a 26% increase in cruise capacity for ships departing Adelaide compared to the upcoming season.

RAA Travel General Manager Gina Norman said the news signals a huge opportunity for local travellers and the South Australian economy.

“This is truly exciting news for South Aussies – for the first time ever, we’ll see one of the world’s biggest cruise lines homeport right here in Adelaide,” Ms Norman said.

“This move marks a significant step in bringing more convenient cruise holiday options to South Australian travellers, while further supporting the state’s visitor economy.

“It means locals can start their cruise holiday from their own backyard without having to fly interstate first, saving both time and money.

“Having Carnival Adventure based in Adelaide also brings a welcome boost for our tourism sector, from local suppliers and hospitality to tour operators across regional South Australia.

“Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln are already iconic cruise destinations, and now they’ll be featured on even more itineraries, showcasing the very best of our state to the world.

“Carnival’s decision to homeport here shows growing confidence in SA as a cruise destination and that’s fantastic news for both travellers and our local economy.”

Carnival Cruise Line’s newly announced program features more than 200 cruises across four ships – Adventure, Splendor, Encounter and Luminosa – which will visit 39 destinations across Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific.

Carnival will become the only global cruise line to operate year-round in Australia and New Zealand following the departure of several international brands – marking a new chapter for cruising Down Under.

The expansion comes during a period of shifting tides for Australia’s cruise industry, following the retirement of the P&O Cruises brand and the departure of Disney, Cunard and Virgin Voyages from local waters.
