A West Terrace intersection is home to the safety camera catching the most red-light runners in Adelaide, with RAA using the new data as a road safety reminder ahead of school holidays.
In total more than 37,400 drivers were caught running a red light by a fixed camera last financial year – resulting in more than $23 million in fines (including VOC levy) – according to SAPOL expiation data analysed by RAA.
The fixed camera at the intersection of West Terrace and Glover Avenue in the city caught the most drivers, with 1,580 motorists caught running red lights – costing drivers more than $1 million in fines (including VOC levy).
The fixed camera that issued the second-most offences was at the junction of Marion Road and Cross Road, which caught 1,337, followed by Grand Junction Road / Port Wakefield Road with 1,320.
RAA is reminding drivers that they are required to stop when traffic lights turn yellow unless it is unsafe to do so.
With a large portion of South Australian students having finished their school year and the rest to follow this week, RAA Senior Manager Road Safety Charles Mountain reminded drivers to take care around busy roads to reduce road trauma.
“Impatience and distraction are likely the leading causes of red-light running, which is unacceptable and puts other road users and pedestrians at risk,” Mr Mountain said.
“Driving through a red light runs the risk of a collision with other cars if they’re entering the intersection or completing a turn and expecting you to come to a stop as required.
“More than four drivers per day on average are being caught driving through red lights on the corner of West Terrace and Glover Avenue and there are similar numbers at other intersections which is concerning.
“Our roads are set to be busy in the lead-up to Christmas as everyone continues their shopping and preparations for the festive season – and it’s important we don’t get complacent when we’re behind the wheel.
“Stay focused on the task of driving and look out for vulnerable road users including cyclists and pedestrians.
“If you’re attending Christmas functions where you’ll be drinking alcohol, leave the car at home and organise a taxi or rideshare ahead of time.”
