Mid North locals asked to share views on region’s roads

1 May, 2025

South Australia’s Mid North residents can share their view on the region’s road and transport network – with RAA’s Road Assessment Survey now open.

RAA needs the Mid North community’s help to identify key road, transport and tourism issues and locations in the Mid North.

The state’s largest member organisation will conduct a full regional road assessment in SA’s Mid North in the next few months – which will involve detailed site investigations based on community feedback.

SA Government data shows 46 lives were lost and 245 serious injuries suffered between 2014-2023 on roads in the Mid North.

Single-vehicle crashes (hit fixed object, roll over, left road – out of control) were the most common fatal and serious injury crash types, accounting for 59% of lives lost and serious injuries in the region.

RAA Senior Manager Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain said RAA wants to help make safer roads and safer communities for all South Australians.

“RAA regularly reviews regional road and transport networks across the state, to make travelling safer and more accessible,” Mr Mountain said.

“With over 830,000 members and a strong heritage in advocating on behalf of their interests – RAA’s road assessments help the organisation champion necessary infrastructure upgrades and improvements.

“RAA’s Safety and Infrastructure team will visit the Mid North region – including seven council areas – to complete a regional road assessment.

“The last time we formally assessed this region’s roads was 2015 and we want to hear from as many Mid North residents and regular visitors as possible – whether you are an RAA member or not.

“We encourage everyone to complete the survey – to let us know your views on recent road upgrades and where improvements are still needed.

“The survey covers a range of transport and road safety topics including road maintenance and design, speed limits, freight, driver behaviour, public and community transport, as well as pedestrian and cyclist safety.

“The aim of this Mid North Road Assessment Survey is to understand the road issues that our members and the community experience so that we can assess these matters and advocate to government for improvements.”

A map of the region to be assessed in our Mid North Regional Road Assessment is shown below. This includes 7 council areas (Port Augusta, Port Pirie, Northern Areas, Mt Remarkable, Peterborough, Orroroo-Carrieton, Flinders Ranges) as well as the unincorporated area along the Outback Highway and Flinders Ranges Way between Hawker and Lyndhurst.

The survey can be completed at www.raa.com.au/midnorthsurvey by 9am on Friday 23 May. If you have any questions, email roadsafety@raa.com.au.

This survey takes on average 20-30 minutes to complete, and all responses will remain confidential in line with RAA’s privacy policy. RAA will include anonymised survey results in a regional assessment report to be published in 2025.
