No need to panic buy, fuel distribution expected to catch up to demand

10 March, 2026

RAA is calling for calm and reiterating there is no need for motorists to panic buy fuel, with the Federal Government reassuring Australia’s fuel supply remains secure.

It comes as Federal Minister Chris Bowen confirmed Australia’s “diesel and petrol supplies remain, at this point, secure” and there is “as much diesel in Australia today as we had before this crisis began.”

Some fuel retailers in South Australia are experiencing shortages as restocking of fuel tanks has been temporarily impacted by high long weekend demand and motorists bringing forward their next purchase on supply concern.

This sudden spike in demand has caused some localised issues which should be resolved as local distribution networks catch up over the coming days.

RAA’s Fuel Expert Peter Nattrass urged South Australians not to panic buy.

“While we appreciate there is global uncertainty – there is no need to queue for fuel or panic buy,” Mr Nattrass said.

“We don’t want to see a repeat of the toilet paper situation we had during COVID.

“The increased demand we’re seeing now is emptying service station tanks faster than usual and the local supply chain needs time to catch up.

“Absolutely top up or fill up if you need fuel, but panic buying will only exacerbate availability and cost issues.

“From an RAA point of view, at this point, our concern is with the price of fuel.

“This morning the terminal gate price rose to $1.88 and $2.20 for unleaded and diesel respectively, so we’re expecting retail prices to remain high.

“Our message to motorists remains the same – use the RAA app to find lower cost fuel, but please if you see queuing out onto a road, drive on by as you will find a convenient supply elsewhere.”
