RAA members who have broken down in remote areas without mobile or Wi-Fi coverage will soon be able to receive help at the roadside thanks to Apple’s roadside assistance via satellite.
The new satellite roadside assistance will be available for Apple iPhone 14 and later models in Australia, and features a short questionnaire before drivers are able to text the RAA directly.
This feature will be rolled out across Australia, so drivers have access roadside assistance through RAA’s sister clubs – regardless of where they have broken down.
RAA responds to more than 350,000 call-outs a year, with many breakdowns occurring beyond the reach of mobile networks. This new satellite feature will provide RAA members with peace of mind in low coverage areas across the country.
RAA General Manager of Automotive Services Dorothy Nycz said keeping people safe on the road is at the heart of what RAA does – and this new satellite feature provides additional assurance for over 830,000 members.
“RAA has been there to help South Australians on the side of the road for more than a century, and this new technology offers them even more peace of mind,” Ms Nycz said.
“Access to help during a breakdown isn’t just about convenience – it’s an important safety issue.
“This innovation means assistance can be requested, even in areas where there is no mobile coverage and communication has traditionally been a challenge.
“Technology like this gives drivers greater confidence to explore more of our state and beyond.”
Roadside Assistance via satellite will be available nationwide from Monday, 15 September.
The technology builds on Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite, launched in 2022, which connects iPhone users with emergency services when out of range.
The service applies to all iPhone 14 or later models, with AMS-affiliated motoring club members receiving benefits according to their membership, while non-members can access support on a pay-per-use basis.
Apple will provide Roadside Assistance via Satellite free of charge to iPhone users for the first two years after activating a device. The satellite function is best used with a clear sky view away from dense bushland, steep terrain or enclosed spaces.
Note: Services only cover vehicles located on or near public roads. Off-road recovery is not included.
