Plan ahead for a safe New Year’s Eve

30 December, 2025

Ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations across the state, RAA is urging South Australians to plan their transport for the evening and make safety a priority.

With crowds expected at fireworks displays, public events and venues across the state, RAA is reminding road users that preparation is key to avoiding risky decisions tomorrow night.

Free public transport is available on all Adelaide Metro bus, train and tram services between 5pm on the New Year’s Eve and 6am on the 1st of January, 2026.

RAA Senior Manager of Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain said planning transport in advance could help take the pressure off on the night.

“New Year’s Eve is great a night for celebrating, and planning how you will get home will ensure you’re starting the new year off safely,” Mr Mountain said.

“If alcohol is part of your plans, driving shouldn’t be – the safest choice is to organise a designated driver or alternative transport ahead of time.

“Be aware ride-share services and taxis will be in high demand, so be prepared for wait times or book ahead where possible.

“Free public transport after 5pm is also a great option on New Year’s Eve, making it easier for people to leave the car at home and get back safely.

“With more people out celebrating, motorists need to slow down and be especially mindful of pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.

“By planning ahead, being patient and looking out for one another, we can all enjoy the celebrations and start the New Year safely.”

RAA’s tips for a safe New Year’s Eve

  • Don’t drink and drive – If you’re planning to have a few drinks, organise a designated driver or alternative transport ahead of time so you’re not tempted to get behind the wheel.
  • Make the most of free public transport – Adelaide Metro is offering free public transport from 5pm on Wednesday 31 December until 6am on Thursday 1 January. Free travel is also available from 3pm for ticket holders attending the NYE Big Bash League match at Adelaide Oval.
  • Watch out for others – Drivers are urged to stay alert and look out for pedestrians and other vulnerable road users, particularly in busy celebration areas.
  • Be patient and look after each other – Remember a little patience can go a long way on our roads.
