Port Pirie ratepayers to save with RAA Solar installation

20 May, 2025

RAA is installing a total of 201kW of solar across six Council sites – including the Aquatic Centre, Library and Tourism and Arts Centre – saving the Council and ratepayers $50,000-$60,000 annually.

Most sites will see a reduction in grid electricity of more than 40%, reducing the Council’s CO2 emissions by 85,000kg in the first year alone.

The solar systems build on the Port Pirie Council’s green credentials – with the town already home to the state’s largest public EV charging hub installed by the RAA in 2024.

The 200kW RAA Charge ‘super site’ is powered by net 100% renewable electricity and features eight charging bays located at the Port Pirie Regional Arts and Tourism Centre.

RAA Chief Strategy Officer and General Manager Home & Energy Ben Owen said, the Council’s investment in solar and involvement in the RAA Charge network has put Port Pirie on the map as one of the state’s most sustainable regional cities.

“The six solar systems designed and installed by our in-house teams will positively benefit Port Pirie residents – with Council and ratepayers set to save nearly $60,000 in one year alone,” Mr Owen said.

“Council and ratepayers also have peace-of-mind – with the knowledge RAA stands behind our work both now and into the future.

“As SA’s largest member organisation – with over 830,000 members – we want to help South Aussies and the business community get their electricity bills down and take advantage of our state’s abundant solar resources.

“South Australia has been a leader in the transition to renewable electricity – most of which is generated in our regional communities – now we want to ensure our regional communities have the infrastructure to support the transition to a low carbon future.”

Port Pirie Mayor Leon Stephens said RAA’s solar installation project is a significant step towards a more sustainable future for the Port Pirie region.

“This installation benefits both our environment and our ratepayers,” Mr Stephens said.

“We have the greatest confidence in our partnership with the RAA and will continue to strive to supply better services to our community, as does the RAA.”
