RAA Energy’s new Member Smart plan offers cheaper rates to RAA members without solar, made possible by removing the costs associated with supporting solar feed-in tariffs.
The new plan is 14% below the Australian Energy Regulators Default Market Offer (DMO) – or $321 cheaper each year for a typical household compared to the DMO.*
The Member Smart plan is part of a wider suite of plans aimed at providing more tailored pricing for households, depending on their situation.
RAA General Manager Home & Energy Ben Owen said RAA Energy’s plans give members access to electricity rates without a retail markup, for a small monthly subscription.

“We launched RAA Energy last year because so many of our 830,000 members were telling us that sky high power bills were putting huge pressure on household budgets.” Mr Owen said.
“We wanted to offer a plan to RAA members that was transparent, that didn’t profit from the energy used by households and that didn’t punish loyalty.
“We’ve had fantastic feedback from our members who have signed up so far.
“The next step for us was to build out our offering to give households more options to choose a plan that best suits their needs – which is where our new plans for members without solar come in.
“Put simply, if you don’t have solar but your electricity plan includes a feed-in tariff, you might be paying more than you need to for your power.
“In SA, due to the high penetration of solar, in some periods it costs retailers money to put that excess energy back into the grid, while they also bear the cost of providing feed-in tariffs where one is included in the plan.
“As a transparent energy provider, we thought the right thing to do was offer a plan that de-couples those households without solar from those that do.
“Removing the costs associated with providing feed-in tariffs brings prices down and we’ve passed these savings on to our members.
“If you haven’t shopped around for energy recently and you’re an RAA member, have a look at the rates on our website and compare them to what you’re paying currently.
“We don’t profit from the electricity you use, so the savings could be significant.
“Our rates are extremely competitive and It only takes five minutes to switch.”
Renter Simon Zwarts from Davoren Park said not having access to solar meant his household was vulnerable to high energy prices.
“My wife and I have been renters at a number of properties over the past 12-13 years,” Mr Zwarts said.
“Only one of these had solar, and it was a very old system so we didn’t see much difference in our energy prices.
“Energy bills are one of our biggest household expenses and we have tried to manage these with payment plans in the past, so any help to reduce them through cheaper rates would be a huge help.
“We’ll definitely be comparing RAA Energy’s new rates and potentially making the switch.”
