RAA launches Regional Road Safety Program in Jamestown

1 May, 2025

South Australia’s riskiest roads as voted by the community have been revealed by RAA – with a RAA will hold a road safety event in Jamestown during National Road Safety Week, with Mid North road users invited to share their views on why so many lives are being lost on regional roads.

National Road Safety Week is held every May and this year, RAA is coming to Jamestown to understand the local community’s road safety challenges.

Between 2019 and 2023 there were 521 casualty crashes in the Mid North region, resulting in 35 lives lost, 190 serious injuries and 506 minor injuries.

Collisions with fixed objects are the most common casualty crash type in the region, followed by roll over crashes. These two crash types account for 59% of all fatal and serious injury crashes in the region.

Nearly two thirds (64%) of casualty crashes occurred on roads with a speed limit of 100km/h or greater, including 69% of fatal and serious injury crashes.

RAA has more than 820,000 members and a strong heritage in advocating on behalf of their interests – we want to use our power as South Australia’s largest mutual member organisation to help make positive change.

On Tuesday, 13 May , a contingent of RAA staff including Senior Manager Safety and Infrastructure, Charles Mountain, will be at Jamestown to listen to local members’ concerns about road safety issues in their area.

There are two sessions available – 1.30 to 3.00pm and 4.30 to 6.00pm.  Anyone who wants to attend the event can register online

Mr Mountain said these sessions will be a listening experience to better understand what RAA as an organisation can do to help improve road safety in the Mid North.

“We really want to hear what locals have to say about local roads and issues,” Mr Mountain said.

“We will give attendees the opportunity to share their road safety-related views and concerns – and hear what they think needs to be done to resolve them.

“Advocating for our members is at the heart of why RAA exists – as is making the roads safer for all South Australians.

“We will also use the feedback we hear to inform our upcoming Regional Road Assessment, which will cover the Mid North region.”
