This week RAA will be in the Mid-North region from Tuesday to Friday reviewing issues raised in a community survey and through stakeholder consultation.
Some of the major towns RAA’s Road Safety team will be visiting to investigate local road and infrastructure issues are Port Pirie, Port Augusta, Jamestown, Peterborough and Crystal Brook.
Some of the key roads being looked at this week include:
RAA also have a second week of site assessments scheduled in the second half of July passing through the north of the region and including through Quorn, Orroroo, Hawker and Blinman.
Some of the key roads for this trip will include:
This is the third stage of RAA’s assessment, having already conducted a community survey – and asked locals about their key issues in a forum for Mid North residents.
RAA’s Road Safety team have also discussed what they have heard so far with local councils and other key stakeholders.
Once RAA’s site assessments are complete, they will be preparing a detailed report to be released later in the year.
SA Government data shows 46 lives were lost and 245 serious injuries suffered between 2014-2023 on roads in the Mid North.
Single-vehicle crashes (hit fixed object, roll over, left road – out of control) were the most common fatal and serious injury crash types, accounting for 59% of lives lost and serious injuries in the region.
RAA Senior Manager Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain said this Mid North assessment was crucial to making roads safer for all South Australians.
“We’ve conducted a survey of Mid North residents, and recently visited Jamestown to hear local’s concerns about the region’s road and transport network,” Mr Mountain said.
“This week’s site investigations will be undertaken based on community feedback and are done to help lobby for necessary infrastructure upgrades and improvements across the area.
“Condition of roads, driver behaviour, and dangerous overtaking associated with roads which don’t have sufficient space or overtaking lanes were all commonly raised in our survey, so we’ll be prioritising these issues as part of the report.
“Once the Mid North assessment is complete, RAA’s Road Safety team will include recommendations and findings in a report to improve mobility and road safety across the region.
“Following this assessment, RAA will have looked at the road and transport networks of essentially all major regional areas of South Australia in the past decade on behalf of our 830,000 members.”
