RAA welcomes Horrocks Highway commitment

3 February, 2026

RAA welcomes a $90m State Government election commitment to upgrade the Horrocks Highway, which would address safety concerns raised by RAA members.

The Horrocks Highway is a key corridor through the state’s Mid North, with sections carrying more than 4000 vehicles including 650 heavy vehicles daily.

RAA recently conducted a regional road assessment in the Mid North, investigating complaints from road users about the lack of surface maintenance on some sections and need for more overtaking lanes.

The Horrocks Highway has also regularly featured in RAA’s Risky Roads survey as one of the most-nominated regional roads by South Australians.

The $90m upgrade package would create a new overtaking lane at Sevenhill and extend existing overtaking lanes near Templers and Tarlee.

It would also replace a culvert near Yacka to allow for road trains, conduct road and bridge widening, as well as streetscaping and main street resealing in Tarlee, Rhynie, Auburn, Watervale and Sevenhill.

RAA Senior Manager Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain said the upgrades would be welcomed by road users.

“The Horrocks Highway has regularly been raised with RAA for safety issues, and while upgrades have been made in recent times, there are remaining sections still in need of attention,” Mr Mountain said.

“There is strong community concern about the lack of surface maintenance in recent times and the need for more overtaking lanes.

“This package is much needed and would substantially address these concerns.

“RAA looks forward to working with whoever forms government to advocate for much-needed upgrades to improve road safety outcomes.”
