RAA welcomes rail commitment for Adelaide’s booming north

25 February, 2026

RAA has welcomed the State Government’s commitment to preserve a rail corridor to Adelaide’s north and progress planning for its extension.

RAA has long championed better public transport options on behalf of its members and today’s announcement marks a significant step toward delivering the infrastructure South Australians need as the state grows toward two million people.

The new mass transit corridor will stretch approximately 33 kilometres, linking the existing metropolitan rail network at Dry Creek and winding through Waterloo Corner and Riverlea before reaching Two Wells.

The announcement follows the release of RAA’s election platform, Growth without Gridlock, which calls for an expanded public transport network and road upgrades to cater for South Australia’s housing and population growth and maintain our state’s liveability.

Adelaide’s northern suburbs are the fastest growing region in the state, with the area expected to account for 40 per cent of Greater Adelaide’s population increase over the next 30 years — translating to around 113,000 new dwellings and an additional 250,000 people.

RAA Chief Executive Officer Nick Reade said extending rail lines to the north and south of Adelaide is crucial to help our state achieve growth without gridlock.

“Preserving this rail corridor and committing to plan its extension are welcome steps to ensure our public transport network can expand in line with population growth in Adelaide’s north,” Mr Reade said.

“Building rail lines to new developments not only gives residents more transport options, but it also takes pressure off our road network, reduces congestion and protects SA’s liveability.”
