With Fire Danger Season taking effect in nine SA districts from this weekend, RAA is reminding homeowners to take simple steps to reduce their bushfire risk.

The Flinders, Lower South East, Mid North, Murraylands, North East Pastoral, North West Pastoral, Riverland, Upper South East and Yorke Peninsula districts all enter their Fire Danger Season (FDS) on Saturday, 1 November.

RAA insurance claim data shows the average value of a bushfire insurance claim is more than $45,000 – highlighting the potential for significant damage should a bushfire enter your property.

RAA insurance claims data also shows the suburbs to record the most bushfire insurance claims since 2015 are Lobethal, Kersbrook, Freeling and Woodside.

It’s prompted RAA insurance to remind all SA homeowners to get on top of maintenance jobs that reduce bushfire risk as the weather warms up.

These include cleaning gutters, trimming long grasses and removing any unnecessary flammable items like wood, mulch piles and leaves from near the home.

RAA insurance Head of Claims Jess Lyons urged SA homeowners to heed CFs advice about property preparation.

“Bushfires can do significant damage to your property, but simple maintenance jobs can help to safeguard your home and reduce your risk,” Ms Lyons said.

“As Fire Danger Season begins in more areas from this weekend, if you haven’t already, now is the time to remove any excess vegetation or flammable material from near your home.

“If you’re not sure what your property requires, the CFS website has a wealth of knowledge and advice, so we’d encourage all homeowners to jump on there and review what might be relevant to them.

“This is even more important if you live near bush or scrubland or in other areas of high to extreme bushfire danger.”

The Lower Eyre Peninsula and West Coast districts’ Fire Danger Seasons came into effect on 15 October.

Fire Danger Season dates for the Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges and Kangaroo Island districts have not yet been announced.

Preparing your property for Fire Danger Season

  • Create a defendable space by reducing vegetation around your property and managing trees near your home. This includes clearing your gutters, mowing lawns and clearing weeds.
  • Remove flammable materials such as wood piles, fallen branches and other debris.
  • Ember-proof your home by filling gaps in roof coverings, gutters, wall vents, under eves and through gaps in decking where embers could get in and ignite a fire.
