Major road closures for the Adelaide 500 will begin on Friday, with new RAA analysis showing which roads are typically in the ‘Slow Zone’ that experience heavy delays during peak hour.
Several major roads such as Wakefield Road, Dequetteville Terrace and Bartels Road will be closed for the next fortnight, causing delays on other arterials east of the CBD.
RAA traffic analysis from previous years reveals the key roads which typically have their median travel times increase significantly during the morning weekday peak, including:
Last year, the intersection of Greenhill and Glen Osmond Roads carried an extra 11,200 vehicles per day during the road closure period – highlighting the extra pressure on surrounding roads at this time.
Most of this year’s road closures will be in place from Friday 8 November at 6am and include:
6am Friday 8 November (6:00am) – 6am Thursday 21 November:
6am Friday 8 November – 6am Tuesday 19 November:

RAA’s advice for drivers wanting to avoid the worst of the peak hour delays includes travelling prior to 7:30am, taking public transport or dusting off the bike.
RAA Senior Manager Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain urged drivers to plan their journeys.
“Drivers need to plan ahead to avoid delays if driving through the eastern suburbs near the CBD for the next fortnight,” Mr Mountain said.
“Almost all main roads in the area bounded by Pulteney Street, Payneham Road, Portrush Road and Glen Osmond Road are likely to be impacted by a longer and sharper peak period.
“Travel time data from previous years shows the delays are at their worst after 7:30am, so if leaving earlier is an option for you, we recommend doing so.
“This might be a good time to either start later or even work from home for a couple of days if that option is available to you.
“Another great option is to take the bike on a route such as the Norwood-Magill Bikeway – as cycling may well be quicker than driving during peak hour over the next fortnight.
“Keep in mind that cycle paths such as the Kensington and Burnside Bikeways that cross the Park Lands between Grant Avenue (Rose Park) Grenfell Street will also have some detours in place.
“Otherwise, consider public transport so you can use the time to read a book or catch up on emails.
“O-Bahn bus services offer a great option as they are nearly fully separated from other traffic until reaching Grenfell Street in the city.”
