Drivers should expect longer travel times between the CBD and eastern suburbs during the morning and afternoon peak periods from Friday – as parts of roads such as Wakefield Road, Dequetteville Terrace and Bartels Road are closed.
RAA is advising motorists that the best way to avoid peak-hour morning delays is to travel before 7:30am, or consider alternative options like cycling or public transport.
The afternoon peak period will also be impacted as some routes will experience increased congestion until later than usual.
On the first Friday of closures last year, Fullarton Road’s median travel time between Greenhill Road and The Parade was up from 9 minutes to 45 minutes at 8:30am in peak hour.
Using previous years’ data, RAA has also found median weekday morning travel times jump significantly across other key roads, including:
Roads through the Adelaide Park Lands are also impacted – last year, Unley Road (Greenhill Road to South Terrace) took an average of nine minutes at the height of the morning peak throughout the week, and as much as 15 minutes some days. This is compared to the usual two-minute median travel time.
Botanic Road and Rundle Road were also impacted, with travel times about three minutes longer than the usual one minute.

RAA Senior Manager Road Safety Charles Mountain Charles Mountain said anyone commuting through the eastern suburbs near the CBD should plan ahead.
“Drivers should expect heavier delays during the morning peak, especially after 7.30am,” Mr Mountain said.
“The road network in the eastern suburbs comes under significant pressure during Grand Final closures, so giving yourself extra time is essential.
“We see thousands of extra cars funnelling onto alternative corridors, that’s why even short commutes can take twice as long.
“If you can leave before the peak or switch to transport that bypasses the congestion, you’ll save a lot of time, while workers with flexible working arrangements or the option to work from home could utilise this to reduce stress on the transport network.
“Cycling routes can be quicker, but riders should check which routes will still be available during the event.
“O-Bahn bus services offer a great option as they are nearly fully separated from other traffic until reaching Grenfell Street in the city.”
