RAA has revealed the worst school pedestrian crossings for red-light running, urging drivers to take extra care as students return to class.
The signalised pedestrian crossing at Portrush Road, Linden Park caught 3,475 drivers going through red lights from 2020-2024 to remain SA’s worst pedestrian crossing for red-light running.
The crossing is located near three schools – Linden Park Primary School and Glenunga International High School – making it a popular spot for children to cross the road.
Pedestrian crossing sites at Kensington Road near Marryatville Primary (1,872 offences), Marion Road near Ascot Park Primary (1,725 offences) and Goodwood Road near Goodwood Primary (1,451 offences) also continue to be hotspots for drivers running red lights in the past five years.
Meanwhile, the Kensington Road crossing further west near Marryatville High School only recorded 40 offences in 2024, following the installation of the red-light camera and other safety treatments at this site to improve compliance in 2023.
The installed safety features include red and white stripe traffic signal pole wrapping, enhanced signal face target boards and advance warning signs.
These welcome upgrades help to increase driver awareness and conspicuity of the crossing – and this has likely contributed to its relatively high level of compliance.
RAA Senior Road Safety Manager Charles Mountain is urging drivers to take care around pedestrian crossings as students return to class.
“With thousands of children returning to school today, it’s a reminder to stay vigilant and aware around schools,” Mr Mountain said.
“It’s alarming that motorists continue to run red lights at pedestrian crossings near schools and it’s important to remember children are some of our most vulnerable road users – especially as the same few signalised pedestrian crossing sites continue to have high numbers of red-light offences recorded.
“RAA welcomes the funding that the government has committed to road safety around schools.
“RAA would like to see authorities continue to install safety treatments at signalised pedestrian crossings, similar to those installed near Marryatville High School, which has recorded relatively low numbers of red light running compared to other sites since its upgrade.
“We’re also reminding road users to stay vigilant around school zones and school crossings, particularly where children are in the vicinity
“Ensure you’re observing the 25km/h speed limit when children are present in school zones, and remember these speed limits apply whenever children are present, even out of school hours, including weekends.”
