In South Australia, 25km/h school zones operate on local roads 24 hours a day, seven days a week, throughout the year whenever a child is present.
The rule applies when a child is on the road, footpath or median strip within the school zone, including when they are riding a bike or scooter.
A child is defined as anyone under 18 years of age, as well as a student of any age wearing a school uniform.
However, the new 40km/h school precinct speed limits being rolled out across South Australia do not apply at all times.
Those limits are time-based and apply on school days for Government schools between 8am and 9.30am and 2pm and 4pm. This means they do not apply on weekends, public holidays or during school holidays.
RAA Senior Manager Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain said motorists shouldn’t assume there won’t be children near schools during the holidays.
“School might be out, but the 25km/h speed limits on local roads near schools still applies whenever children are present in a school zone,” Mr Mountain said.
“Children may be around school grounds during the holidays for sport, recreation, holiday programs or simply walking and riding through the area, so drivers still need to be prepared to slow down.
“Drivers should look for the school zone signs and white zigzag markings on the road and be ready to reduce their speed if they see a child.
“Lower speeds give motorists more time to identify a potential hazard and react, while also reducing the severity of a collision if one does occur.”

· The 40km/h time-based limits do not apply during school holidays, weekends or public holidays.
