Six-month partial tram line closures to begin

31 July, 2025

RAA is urging commuters to plan their journeys as part of Adelaide’s tram network begins a six-month closure alongside other major road closures, starting this weekend.

The Glenelg tram line will be closed between South Terrace and Glenelg from 4 August 2025 to January 2026, following a full closure of the tram network all day Saturday, 2 August – Sunday, 3 August.

South Road will also be fully closed between Aroha Terrace, Black Forest and Wellington Street, Glandore – from 10pm Friday 8 August – 5:00am Monday 11 August.

This will allow for major works as part of the Tram Grade Separation Projects which will remove three congested level crossings on Marion Road, Cross Road (Plympton), and Morphett Road.

The new tram overpasses will be delivered to improve the flow of traffic and ease congestion, while also improving travel times and safety.

The existing tram overpass at South Road, Glandore will be rebuilt at the same time, as part of the North-South Corridor T2D Project, while the intersections at Marion Road and Cross Road and Marion Road and Anzac Highway are being upgraded.

There will be several closures of main roads and tram lines across this time, including:

There will be substitute bus services available for all tram line closures across this time, which will connect with trams arriving and departing at South Terrace tram stop and will also match the tram frequency and capacity.

These substitute bus services will operate every 10-20 minutes day and night, increasing to every five minutes across weekday peak periods.

RAA Senior Manager Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain encouraged tram commuters to pre-plan their routes across this period to avoid delays.

“RAA is urging all Glenelg tram users to plan ahead, as trams will be disrupted while important upgrades are made over the next six months,” Mr Mountain said.

“The replacement bus services will help tram users reach their destination, but there will likely be longer than usual travel times with modified routes and increased traffic.

“RAA has long advocated for a grade separation of the tram crossing at Marion Road and Cross Road and we welcome the progress being made on this project.

“Approximately 50,000 vehicles pass through the Marion Road and Cross Road level crossings each day and during the morning and afternoon peak periods, we also see around 30 trams passing through.

“Around 26,600 vehicles also pass through the Morphett Road Level Crossing each day, with many motorists often experiencing congestion and variable travel times during peak morning and afternoon periods.

“RAA studies have found that traffic on Marion Road had a red light due to trams or the Mike Turtur Bikeway about 30 per cent of the time during the morning peak (7am-9am) – or about 36 minutes of the two-hour period.

“These infrastructure upgrades will provide accessible tram stops with improved pedestrian access, while reducing travel time and also improving safety for local all road users.

“The Mike Turtur Bikeway will also be elevated so cyclists can enjoy a shared pathway along the tram line.”
