The uplift follows a turbulent start to 2025, as major global events across the US, Middle East and Europe prompted many travellers to delay booking overseas trips until later in the year.
Internationally, the United Kingdom is the top destination for December, followed by New Zealand, the United States, Japan and Singapore.
Many South Australians are packing their bags to trade video calls for carols with loved ones – with international travel numbers returning to pre-COVID levels.
Domestically, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Hobart lead bookings as Australians look to combine summer events, festive activities and convenient short flights.
RAA Travel General Manager Gina Norman said the shift toward December was noticeable early in the year.
“We started noticing that many South Australians were delaying major travel plans, with so much global uncertainty at the start of 2025,” Ms Norman said.
“People wanted to wait for a period that felt more predictable, and December has become that window.

“The result is a very strong 26% uplift in forward bookings across the festive season.
“A big part of this demand is driven by travellers wanting to reunite with family and friends for Christmas, particularly in the UK and New Zealand.
“At the same time, domestic capitals are performing well because they offer a reliable mix of events, summer weather and accessibility.
“We’re also seeing a clear shift toward experience-focused travel, with rail journeys, Christmas market river cruises and Northern Lights itineraries all gaining momentum.
“Festive cruising across the South Pacific and New Zealand continues to stand out as one of the most popular options for December departures.
“Japan remains exceptionally strong, with travellers valuing how seamless it is to explore whether they choose a guided tour, a cruise or a fully independent itinerary.”
