RAA is urging South Australians to shop around for their electricity provider, following the release of the ACCC’s latest electricity report showing most households are paying hundreds of dollars more than they should each year.
The December 2024 ACCC Report showed some customers who had not shopped around for two or more years were paying an average of $317 more per year than newer offers on the market.
A separate RAA survey showed:
RAA Chief Executive Officer Nick Reade said if households hadn’t switched providers in the last year or two, they could be throwing money away.
“At a time when so many households are struggling with the rising cost of living, no one should be paying more for electricity than they need to,” Mr Reade said.
“The ACCC report has shown that most energy providers punish loyalty – luring them in on seemingly attractive low rate offers, only to jack up the rates over time when there are better deals available in the market.
“The report also found more than 80 per cent of Australian households are not on their retailers best electricity plan.
“It’s no wonder our research shows that 74% of people don’t trust their energy provider to be fair and transparent with pricing.
“There’s a perception that switching energy providers is a cumbersome and onerous task – that’s a myth we really need to dispel.
“With RAA Energy for instance, that’s not the case –- it takes five minutes and you don’t even need to notify your existing provider.”
Mr Reade said the ACCC findings and RAA research demonstrated the traditional retail model isn’t working and that people have lost trust in their energy providers.
“We launched RAA Energy last year to give South Australians an energy plan they can trust,” Mr Reade said.
“RAA Energy is an electricity plan that’s fundamentally different from what other providers have been offering,” Mr Reade said.
“Unlike most retailers, we don’t profit from the electricity our members use – we’re a member-based organisation that doesn’t need to make a profit for shareholders.
“Instead, we charge a monthly subscription fee to cover our operating costs, and pass on the price of electricity at the same rate we purchase it for.
“We wanted to create a plan that was transparent, simple to understand and gives peace of mind so our members know they’re always getting a fair deal on their electricity.
“Since we launched RAA Energy, we’ve seen households that have saved between a couple of hundred dollars to almost a thousand dollars on their last quarterly energy bill.
“We want to empower people to take control of their energy use, which is why we are also offering free solar assessments, personalised energy insights and monthly billing to help households better manage their energy use and their budget when it comes to paying their electricity bills.”
