South Australians hurting at the hip pocket

12 February, 2025

Cost-of-living pressures have dominated a survey run by the state’s largest membership organisation in the lead up to the upcoming Federal and State elections.

With more than 825,000 members spanning over 70% of South Australian households, RAA’s research provides a valuable insight into what matters most to South Australians across the state.

RAA Chief Executive Officer Nick Reade said beyond the issue of health, the cost of living came through as a consistent theme affecting South Australians.

“It’s not surprising people are hurting at the hip pocket with interest rates at a 12-year high and the cost of energy, groceries and insurance continuing to rise,” Mr Reade said.

“We use this research and feedback from members to inform our policy positions and better understand how we can help our members.

“We know energy bills are hurting our members, so we launched RAA Energy last year – to provide our members with access to a fair and transparent energy plan through a provider they know and trust.

“We’re also set to partner with Allianz Australia to better shield our members from the global pressures on the insurance industry that are driving up premiums.

“Our partnership with Allianz will make it easier for us to deliver the value and benefits South Australians have come to trust when they insure with RAA, while keeping our RAA insurance brand and team right here in South Australia.”

Mr Reade said other issues impacting South Australians included improving road safety, building key infrastructure to support housing developments and fairer motoring taxes and charges.

“Road and transport issues remain high priorities for South Australians, with road safety, fairer taxes and charges, and fair and transparent fuel pricing still important to the voting public,” Mr Reade said.

“These issues are at the core of our organisation, and we continue to be a strong voice for our members on road safety, fuel pricing and eliminating the road maintenance backlog through our ongoing discussions with the state and federal governments.

“Last year we called for an extension to the Seaford line to Aldinga and Gawler line to Concordia – that’s still an absolute priority to cater for the thousands of new homes being built in the north and south.

“We also want to see more funding to get on top of South Australia’s $2 billion road maintenance backlog.”
