RAA is reminding road users to be safe this Spring school holiday period – with warmer weather set to bring more cars out to the regions, and cyclists and pedestrians out on to the road.
So far this year 61 people have lost their lives and 611 have been seriously injured on South Australian roads.
While fatalities are down slightly on a horror 2023 (61 vs 84 at this time last year), serious injuries are continuing to occur at an alarming rate (611 vs 643 this time last year).
In order to be on track to reach SA’s Road Safety Strategy targets – SA would need to record less than 80 lives lost and 637 serious injuries for the full calendar year.
The Strategy targets a 50% reduction in lives lost and 30% reduction in serious injuries by 2031.
RAA Senior Manager Safety and Infrastructure said the spring school holidays would mean more regional driving for many South Australians.
“We’re continuing to see a concerning rate of road trauma in South Australia,” Mr Mountain said.
“These school holidays thousands of families may be heading to our regional areas for a road trip, or getting out on their bikes and sharing the road with others.
“If you’re going on a road trip, make sure you’re driving to the conditions, taking regular rest breaks and remaining focused on the task of driving.
“If you’re towing, double-check the trailer or caravan, paying close attention to tyres, brakes, lights and how it is attached to the tow vehicle. Ensure any loads carried are restrained and distributed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure safe handling out the road.
“If your vehicle hasn’t been recently serviced, book it in before your head off to avoid a breakdown that could ruin your holiday.
“If you’re riding or walking with your family in the metro area, always stick to the dedicated paths and crossings and look out for one another. Use pedestrian crossing facilities where they are provided.
“Pay particular attention at train and tram corridors and only cross where there is a dedicated crossing point – and always scan the tracks to the right and left before attempting to cross.
“With three months left in the year, we’re urging all drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to be aware of the responsibility that comes with sharing the road.
“We’re still losing too many South Australian to road trauma.”
The October school holidays begin from this weekend and finish on Sunday 13 October.
