RAA Travel data shows strong demand for holidays during the cooler months, with South Aussies’ top winter destinations this year including Bali, Europe, Cairns and Darwin.
As the chill of winter sets in, South Australians tend to fall into two camps—those who embrace the cold and those who escape it.
The most popular overseas destinations for the upcoming winter period are warmer escapes, with Bali still the most popular, followed by London and Rome.
It’s a similar story for interstate travel – with Cairns, Darwin and Brisbane all among the top five destinations.
However an increasing number of travellers are staying closer to home in SA, where they can embrace the winter chill at destinations like the Adelaide Hills, Barossa and Fleurieu Peninsula.
RAA Travel General Manager Gina Norman said travellers are increasingly split when it comes to winter travel, with the gap narrowing between the holidaymakers chasing the sun and those leaning into the cold.
“We’re seeing a clear divide—some travellers are heading to the warmth of a European summer or tropical Bali, while others are opting for a wintery trip closer to home,” Ms Norman said.
“Historically South Aussies have looked to escape the cold of an Adelaide winter, but now the pull of a red wine next to the fire is getting stronger.
“There are plenty of options in our world-class wine regions in SA, where you can relax and reset rather than chase the sun during the winter period.
“Tasmania also appeals to travellers seeking a true winter experience—complete with cosy layers, outdoor hikes and crisp air.
“Of course, winter is also the perfect time for a ski experience in either Australia or New Zealand.”
Ms Norman said flexibility and value continue to be top priorities for travellers this year.
“Many people are looking to maximise their annual leave with well-timed trips, and they’re choosing destinations that offer great experiences without breaking the budget.
“Darwin is surging as a tropical alternative to Queensland, so we expect the NT will be one of the most popular choices this winter.
“Further afield, we’re also seeing strong interest in guided holidays, river cruises and rail journeys, especially for those heading to Europe.
“But there is a growing appreciation for what’s on our doorstep—people are booking boutique stays, enjoying local food and wine, and taking the chance to slow down and unwind close to home.”
