Travellers embracing SA to help the hip pocket

25 July, 2025

South Aussie travellers are exploring their home state on a budget – with more than two thirds of intrastate travellers spending $1000 or less on their most recent SA holiday, according to an RAA Travel survey.

Of those surveyed who travelled within SA in the past year, 67% managed to keep the costs of transport, accommodation, food and activities under $1,000 on their most recent trip.

And more than half of those managed to spend less than $500 – proving there’s plenty to see and do in SA without breaking the bank.

The most popular destinations favoured by travellers from Adelaide were the Adelaide Hills (21%) and Yorke Peninsula (20%), while the Barossa (17%), Fleurieu Peninsula (17%) and Riverland (14%) rounded out the top five.

The overall average cost of a holiday within SA was $1,160, showing those who can afford it are still happy to invest in their intrastate trip.

By comparison, the average cost of an international trip was $7,692.

RAA Travel General Manager Gina Norman said Winter was a great time to explore what South Australia has to offer.

“Cost-of-living is still front of mind for many South Aussies – who are still looking for an affordable solution when it comes to a trip away,” Ms Norman said.

“RAA Travel research shows 77% of South Aussies are intending to take a domestic holiday in the next 12 months – as we see a rise in weekends away and staycations.

“With world-class regions like the Adelaide Hills and Barossa on our doorstep, there are several options for a cosy Winter getaway with friends or family.

“South Australia has so much to offer – and it’s possible to have a getaway to many of these regions without the price tag.

“It’s clear South Aussies are looking for a short but sweet trip and RAA Travel has plenty of options available for travellers looking to explore on a budget.”

RAA Travel’s tips for an affordable holiday

  • Drive to your destination: Driving to your destination can significantly shave the costs off your trip. Select holidays close to home – like the Adelaide Hills – to save on petrol costs.
  • Enjoy free activities: There’s plenty to do when it comes to our great state – and some don’t cost you anything. There’s an abundance of hikes and walks in the Adelaide Hills and Barossa, or opt to swim in some of the world’s best beaches. RAA Travel also offers a wide array of experience deals to help you save on your holiday.
  • Consider camping or glamping: There’s plenty to be said for packing your swag or tent in the car and heading away on a do-it-yourself holiday. If you’re looking for a little more luxury – try glamping. It still offers you all the fun of camping, with the luxuries you’d expect of a hotel.
  • Pack picnics or self-catering options: Packing your own self-catering options can go a long way in saving a few dollars while away. Consider going out on a hike with your family and friends, partner, or solo – to enjoy the beautiful South Australian landscape. If you’re feeling peckish – or looking for a cheap dining option – be sure to check RAA Rewards for all the latest dining offers.
  • Visit during shoulder season: Shoulder season will always have fewer visitors – for example outside of school holidays or across Winter – which means having some of South Australia’s most idyllic beaches all to yourself. Watch a storm roll in over the ocean and cuddle up by the fire. There’s plenty of fantastic deals – and cheaper options available – so visit during off-peak season to access the best discounts on offer.
