Welcome funding announced for Black Spot locations

26 July, 2024

RAA welcomes a Federal and State Government announcement that 13 key crash locations will receive safety upgrades under the Black Spot program.

The Federal Government will commit $8.9 million to fully fund safety fixes at sites where serious crashes have occurred or are at risk of occurring.

Many of the projects will include upgrades to enhance safety for vulnerable road users – including a scramble crossing at O’Connell and Archer streets in North Adelaide and new median island at the intersection of Kensington Rd and George/Giles streets, Norwood.

It comes after 2023 was the worst year in 25 years for vulnerable road user deaths (pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists).

RAA Senior Traffic Engineer Matt Vertudaches said any funding towards improving road safety infrastructure was welcomed.

“It’s great news for road users that 13 priority locations are set to become safer,” Mr Vertudaches said.

“Many of the projects will greatly improve safety for vulnerable road users at locations with heavy traffic – which is desperately needed after last year’s horror year on our roads.

“Most of the regional projects are designed to mitigate the most frequent regional crash types, which often involve a single vehicle departing the road and colliding with an object or rolling over.

“RAA appreciated the opportunity to be involved in the selection process for identifying Black Spot locations and looks forward to seeing them come to fruition.”
