Winter is coming – time to storm-proof your home

29 May, 2026

SA households are encouraged to protect their properties ahead of wild weather – with storm damage one of the most common reasons for making a home insurance claim.

Damage caused by a storm is the third most common type of home insurance claim at RAA insurance – accounting for around 18% of all home insurance claims so far this year.

With wet and windy weather forecast for South Australia in the coming days, RAA is urging homeowners to take simple preventative steps to protect their property from storm damage.

This includes cleaning gutters to ensure stormwater can flow away from your home, and securing loose items that could become airborne and cause damage.

Head of Claims at RAA insurance Jess Lyons said many storm-related claims could be reduced or avoided with adequate preparation.

“From heavy rain and damaging winds to fallen trees and flooding, winter storms can cause costly damage to your home or property – but a little preparation can go a long way,” Ms Lyons said.

“Winter weather can hit hard and fast in South Australia, so we always recommend preparing your property ahead of time.

“Simple things like cleaning gutters and checking your roof for loose tiles or leaks can make a big difference in protecting your home from water and flooding.

“Securing loose items like outdoor furniture can also help to prevent them becoming a damaging projectile. Bring lighter items inside or use tie-down straps for larger ones like trampolines.

“Above all though, if there is severe weather in your area, stay safe by remaining indoors and keeping across Bureau of Meteorology warnings.”
