Worst speed camera locations revealed as school traffic returns

13 October, 2025

The top 10 fixed and mobile speed camera sites have been revealed as school returns for term four – with a South Eastern Freeway camera costing motorists almost $5 million dollars last financial year.

The Leawood Gardens location topped South Australia’s list of fixed speed cameras for the 2024/25 financial year – nabbing 5,787 drivers breaking the law for $4,809,218 in fines – according to publicly available SA Police data.

The top speed recorded at this site was 137km/h, while almost four in five offences were for drivers exceeding the speed limit by 10-19km/h.

The data shows the Tapleys Hill Road fixed camera at West Beach caught the second-most number of drivers, recording more than 4,146 offences and $2 million worth of fines.

West Lakes Boulevard (West Lakes) was third with 2,001 offences and $1 million in fines, followed by Goodwood Road (Pasadena) and Montague Road (Ingle Farm).

Mobile speed cameras also caught thousands of people exceeding the limit last financial year, with three of the top four hotspots located in the Burnside council area.

Grant Avenue (Rose Park) recorded 2,040 and $1.2 million in fines to take out top spot, while the North-South Motorway at Dry Creek came in second with 1,654 offences and $1.2 million in fines.

Bevington Road (Glenunga) and Conyngham Street (Glenside) were next on the list – combining for more than 2,500 offenders caught – and Ayliffes Road (St Marys) rounded out the top five, catching over 1,000 speeding drivers.

RAA Senior Traffic Engineer Matt Vertudaches has urged drivers to take care as school returns from the October school holidays, with speeding contributing to around 20% of fatal crashes on South Australian roads.

“Seeing thousands of drivers caught speeding each year is a stark reminder of how many people are gambling with not just their own safety, but with the safety of innocent road users around them,” Mr Vertudaches said.

“Speeding is not just about breaking the law – it gives you less time to react and dramatically increases the likelihood and severity of a collision.

“With school returning on Monday, it’s a reminder to drive to the conditions and slow down if vulnerable road users like cyclists and pedestrians are near the road.

“If you’re travelling on the South Eastern Freeway, speed limits can potentially be reduced, sometimes due to roadworks or conditions that aren’t immediately obvious, such as a breakdown.”

Mr Vertudaches said four of the top five mobile sites catching speeding motorists had undergone speed limit changes in recent years.

“It’s critical that drivers pay attention to signs, as speed limits may have recently changed,” Mr Vertudaches said.

“Some in-car GPS systems don’t always update quickly enough when speed zones change, so relying solely on technology can catch people out.

Alarmingly, SAPOL’s data also revealed many drivers were clocked at extreme speeds.

One motorist was detected at 209km/h on the Waterloo Corner section of the North-South Motorway, while another was caught at 188km/h in a 90km/h zone at Dry Creek – more than double the speed limit.

Mr Vertudaches said this showed many motorists continue to put themselves and others at risk by ignoring the speed limit.

“At those speeds, no amount of driver skill or advanced car technology can guarantee safety – and a driver has almost no chance of safely reacting to the unexpected.”
