One week left to nominate Risky Roads for safety upgrades

27 November, 2024

South Australians have just one week left to dob in dodgy roads or intersections and help RAA call for safety upgrades, as part of RAA’s Risky Roads survey.

RAA’s Risky Roads survey is South Australia’s most comprehensive state-wide survey of road users aimed at identifying unsafe roads or intersections, with the current survey open until Wednesday 4 December.

Drivers, riders and pedestrians can nominate any road for safety concerns such as poor surface condition, unsafe design or layout and lack of walking or cycling infrastructure.

Once collated, the results will be used by RAA’s traffic experts to make recommendations to road authorities and State Government over the next 3-4 years.

It comes as the state’s riskiest intersection as voted by the community in 2021 – the junction of Curtis and Heaslip Roads in Angle Vale – last week received $30m in Government funding for a new roundabout to improve safety.

That followed Main Road in Cherry Gardens – the second-most nominated metro road from 2021 – recently reopening after receiving a substantial upgrade including resurfacing, widening and barrier installation.

RAA Senior Traffic Engineer Matt Vertudaches urged South Aussies not to miss out on the opportunity to shape RAA’s infrastructure priorities.

“Leaving feedback about unsafe roads and intersections is one of the most important ways to help us identify spots in our road network that may need upgrading,” Mr Vertudaches said.

“At RAA we want to advocate for safer roads and safer communities on behalf of our 820,000 members – and our Risky Roads survey plays a massive role in helping us do this.

“There is only one week left to nominate an unsafe road or intersection, which takes less than five minutes and you can nominate as many as you like.

“Every nomination is reviewed by our traffic engineers and fed into our database so no nomination is wasted, even if it’s not a busy location.

“Ultimately we use the results to advocate for upgrades and improvements that reduce the likelihood and severity of crashes occurring on our road network.

“We welcome recent announcements and work done by State, Federal and Local Governments to start to address many of the locations that were raised in our last survey – and we look forward to presenting the results of this survey in early 2025.”

All South Australians can nominate roads or intersections until 4 December via the RAA website.
