Powering up: RAA’s Auto Training Team upskills to stay ahead of the EV revolution

20 April, 2023

RAA’s Automotive Training team recently attended an intensive four-day Hybrid and Battery Electric Vehicle Operation and Servicing course at Royal Park.

The accredited training course facilitated by the MTA, focused on upskilling our team on eight units of competency, including safe diagnosis and repair of EV’s and high voltage systems.

Simon Halford from the Future Motoring Team who attended the training said the session provided him with the credibility to discuss real-world repair processes and mechanical operations of EVs with the broader industry.

“The idea of working on the high voltage system of an EV can be intimidating, but the training helped to eliminate that fear and simplify my understanding of the EV’s operating system”.

The team were able to work on a Hybrid Toyota Prius transmission, diagnosing the EV faults in the high and low voltage system. They also learnt how to safely isolate the High Voltage system with the use of specialised protective equipment including protective gloves rated to 1000 volts.

By investing in the team’s education and training we want to ensure that our team has the skills and knowledge to service and repair any vehicle, including the latest EV’s, Simon said.

“As technology continues to rapidly transform the automotive industry, it is crucial to remain ahead of the curve in servicing and repairing EV’s by equipping our team with the knowledge and skills to work on them safely.”

With the rollout of South Australia’s first border-to-border EV charging network underway, EV sales continue to rise. The AAA’s EV Index shows that in the first three months of this year, 58.29 per cent of new medium-sized cars sold in Australia were battery electric vehicles. The latest data shows battery EV sales have surpassed those of Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) cars in the medium-sized car category for the first time on record in Australia.

With a surge in EV adoption amongst our members, we are dedicated to upskilling our roadside patrols to deliver a level of service equivalent to that of traditional petrol or diesel vehicles.

So, whether you drive a petrol, diesel, hybrid or a full battery EV, you can trust that RAA will be there to support you with the highest level of service and expertise.
