RAA Charge network powering ahead in July

14 July, 2023

The RAA Charge network rollout is picking up pace with 15 new electric vehicle (EV) charging sites going into construction in July – 14 of those in South Australia’s regions.

The 15 charging sites entering construction span across the state and include sites at Port Augusta, Mount Gambier, Victor Harbor, Melrose and Kangaroo Island and include a mixture of Destination (7kW), Rapid (150kW) and Ultra-Rapid (200kW) chargers.

Chief Executive Officer Nick Reade said the RAA Charge network rollout was powering ahead, particularly in South Australia’s remote and regional towns.

“We’re really seeing the rubber hit the road now so to speak in our regional areas,” Mr Reade said.

“An impressive 14 of the 15 sites entering construction in July are in our regions so we’re getting closer to unlocking more regional destinations for EV drivers.

“Ensuring EV charging infrastructure is in place in the regions is such an important part of this network and once complete, 75% of charging sites will be in regional SA.

“We now have 36 operational sites, including the first 150kW Rapid charging site at Nuriootpa, which came online this month.

“A further four Rapid or Ultra-Rapid charging sites are currently under construction. These chargers – which are capable of charging an EV in between 10 and 45 minutes – will a real game changer for EV drivers, helping to put an end to that range anxiety.

Mr Reade also said the sale of EVs and Plug-in Hybrid EVs was also continuing to grow, making up 8.4 per cent of new car sales in South Australia in June.

“The demand for EVs is continuing to accelerate and RAA Charge will be there to help EV drivers get around SA,” Mr Reade said.

“We’ll have 140 charging sites across the state when the network is complete, that will help unlock tourism in our regions, and support the uptake of EV in South Australia.”
