RAA Street Smart Primary Program visits APY Lands

22 August, 2024

RAA’s commitment to road safety education reached new heights this month as the Street Smart Primary team visited the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands.

Invited by local communities, the team delivered tailored road safety lessons to students including at the Kenmore Park Junior and Fregon Anangu Schools.

The program, already well-known for its engaging and practical approach, was adapted to suit the unique needs of these remote communities.

The focus was on critical safety topics such as the correct use of seatbelts in vehicles and helmets when riding push bikes or scooters. School students also learned essential steps to fitting a helmet correctly and understanding the risks of not doing so.

RAA’s General Manager of Community & Corporate Affairs Emily Perry said it was a privilege to be invited by local communities to visit the APY Lands and teach the students about road safety.

“Our work in the APY Lands reflects RAA’s dedication not only to road safety but also to reconciliation,” Ms Perry said.

“Through our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan, we strive to improve social and economic outcomes for Aboriginal peoples by working closely with communities across South Australia.”

“RAA’s trip to the APY Lands is a powerful example of how our organisation continues to innovate and adapt to ensure vital road safety messages reach every corner of the state.”

“The Street Smart team tailored their program for students in the APY Lands, giving them a better understanding of road safety and conducting bike safety checks.”

“Students were also shown how to check whether their bikes were safe to ride, basic bike maintenance and the team helped them fit their bikes with bells.”

Each year, RAA’s Street Smart Primary program reaches approximately 40,000 students across 450 schools, delivering age-appropriate road safety education. This critical work is made possible through sponsorship from the South Australian Government’s THINK! Road Safety initiative and the Lifetime Support Authority.
