RAA’s tips to get home safely on New Year’s Eve

30 December, 2024

RAA has issued its top four tips for South Australians ahead of New Year’s Eve (NYE), encouraging South Australians to plan their trip to and from their NYE celebrations.

As South Australians descend on public places, watch firework displays and move around the state to bring in the New Year, RAA is urging everyone to plan their trip and look out for one another.

Staying safe this NYE

  1. Don’t drink and drive! If you’re planning on a few drinks, make sure you’ve organised a designated driver or alternative transport, so you aren’t tempted to drive.
  2. Consider free public transport! Adelaide Metro is offering FREE public transport after 5pm on Tuesday, 31 December until 6am on Wednesday, 1 January 2025. Free travel is also available all day for ticket holders to the NYE Big Bash League match at Adelaide Oval.
  3. Pay attention for all road users! If you are driving, watch out for other road users and pedestrians, particularly near busy areas.
  4. Be patient and look after each other! Above all, look out for one another, be patient and pay attention on our roads.

RAA Senior Manager of Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain said planning ahead was key to having a safe NYE.

“Being prepared is very important on NYE and we’re encouraging everyone to make sure they know how they’re getting to and from their NYE celebrations before the night begins,” Mr Mountain said.

“Planning ahead takes the pressure off and reduces the risk of making a wrong decision if you’ll be celebrating with a few drinks.

“Public transport is free on the night to get you there and home safely.

“Keep in mind that ride sharing services and taxis will be extremely busy so be prepared to wait or book in advance if possible.

“Of course, if you’re planning on driving, please take extra care on the road and keep an eye out for vulnerable road users like pedestrians, especially around celebration hot spots.

“We want everyone to stay safe, have a great time and to start the New Year without any road safety incidents.”
