A safer Goyder Highway, following RAA advocacy

30 December, 2025

A section of the Goyder Highway at Spalding will be made safer following an RAA inspection and nomination for Black Spot funding.

The 3-kilometre stretch of the Goyder Highway between RM Williams Way and the Horrocks Highway will receive shoulder sealing through $733,000 of new Federal funding under the Black Spot Program – an upgrade that will reduce the likelihood of crashes occurring.

The location was nominated for funding by RAA after its traffic engineers assessed the corridor on behalf of local road users in 2024.

RAA’s experts found sections of the road to be just 6.5 metres wide and with gravel shoulders – the narrow surface and absence of sealed shoulders increasing the likelihood of run-off road or head on collisions.

Two casualty crashes occurred on this stretch between 2019-2023, making it eligible for funding under the Black Spot Program.

RAA recommended widening the surface through shoulder sealing, which is a proven road safety intervention that improves the safety rating of roads.

RAA Senior Manager Road Safety Charles Mountain welcomed the funding announcement.

“We welcome the funding that has been allocated to this stretch of the Goyder Highway under the Black Spot Program,” Mr Mountain said.

“Widening the road surface and sealing its shoulders will it significantly improve safety for local road users.

“In late 2024 we assessed this location after being alerted to it by locals and RAA members.

“The location also has an unforgiving roadside environment, with stobie poles and embankments near the road in spots.

“This is great news for anyone who uses this section of the Goyder Highway and we look forward to the works being completed.

“RAA also welcomes the increase in overall national Black Spot funding to $150 million annually.”

Mr Mountain said all South Australians could nominate an unsafe SA road or intersection to RAA, using its Report A Road website.
